Project Name:

Optical Voting Verification Wand

Client:

Votepad

Product description:

The optical voting verification wand senses light reflected from a given surface, allowing voters with visual impairments to review their selections. The wand uses vibrational feedback to indicate to the user whether or not a specific location is marked.

Our Responsibilities:

This design allows people with low vision to verify who they voted for. We used an optical emitter detector pair to sense the presence or absence of a blackened selection. By using a high frequency on the driver and tuning an analog filter on the return path, we were able to reject a wide variety of ambient light conditions. The shape of the tip has been optimized to work with the customers templates while still providing good optical performance. The timer circuit, analog filter, and LED driver within the device are all powered by a tiny capacitor-based switching supply. The device itself is battery-powered. When production issues cropped up with the contract manufacturer, Kinetek provided diagnostic support on the manufacturing process to get the product to the customer.
